Water is given to the chickens via a nipple drinking system and food is given to the chickens in a trough at the front of the cage. You will probably need to de beak the chickens. If you do not want to use layer cages then you will need nest boxes – Nest boxes are also made from galavanised steel but allow the hens to move around the chicken house freely. They are a green alternative to layer cages – which are not kind to the chickens. In a layer cage the chickens will spend their whole life – 4 – 7 hens standing on cage wire – not the best thing if you want happy chickens. These layer cages are slightly bigger than normal layer cages – which only hold between 3 and 5 hens per cage or bay – these hold up to 7 hens – you will need to run a tight operation in regards to cleanliness and disease if you keep 7 hens in each bay.
